Situated
on the Lee shore of the Bay of Guaraguao, Sunset provides a wrap-around
view of Guaraguao Bay and, as one would naturally expect, a ringside seat
for the sun’s daily descent into the sea. Plastic chair and wooden tables,
there’s nothing pretentious here, just a comfortable place to meet friends
or strangers, eat, drink, trade tales or make a few up, all for almost no
money.
The
owners and most of the staff speak English (and, of course, Spanish) with
a bit of French thrown in for those who need it. Of course we know our way
around in Margarita and we’re more than happy to help you find what you
need or want. Our place is also “kid friendly” so bring the whole family.
There’s something on the menu for everybody even if it’s just a plate of
home-cut fries with ketchup.
Despite
its name, Sunset does not close down at dark and service continues until
you go home although we try to get the kitchen closed by 11 pm. On
Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights there’s live music ranging from jazz
to rock to salsa and tango as interpreted by some of the island’s best
musicians. Saturday night is “open mike night” with Natalia and her guitar
carrying the ball while the others gather their courage. We’re always
pleasantly surprised, and we’re sometimes left incredulous by the quality
of talent that turns up for a chance at the microphone. Our music nights
are well appreciated by our Venezuelan friends and tables (14, 4-seaters
and two 12–place picnic tables) are scarce by 9 pm.
What
more is there to say? We’re informally friendly, a boarding house dinner
table where manners prevail but ceremony is eschewed. Our staff is young,
students mostly, eager but courteous and the owners are well traveled and
world-wide-wise. We know what we wanted and we presume you want it too.
Welcome to Sunset. |
